Bassett pregnant woman fatally shot, unborn child dies from maternal trauma autopsy shows

FIELDALE, VA – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the death of Krystal Anne McReynolds and her unborn child. 


The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia has ruled the death of McReynolds and her unborn child as homicide. 


According to the sheriff’s office, McReynolds died as the result of a gunshot wound. 


The cause of death for the unborn child was found to be maternal trauma, authorities said.


As a result of the death, Thomas Christopher McDowell has been charged with second degree murder of McReynolds and use of a firearm during the commission of murder.


The Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Commonwealth’s Attorney Office are working together to determine any additional charges or upgraded charges in relation to the death of the unborn child.


McDowell is currently held in the Henry County Jail without bond.


UPDATE

FIELDALE, VA – A Fieldale man has been arrested after shooting and killing a pregnant woman on Tuesday night.


At around 9:52 p.m., deputies arrived at 60 Fourth Street in Fieldale and located Krystal Anne McReynolds, 34, of Bassett lying outside with a gunshot wound to the face.


McReynolds was transported to SOVAH Health in Martinsville and later to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. 


According to the sheriff's office, McReynolds was four to five months pregnant. She and her unborn child have died.


An autopsy will be conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia to determine the cause and manner of death..


Thomas Christopher McDowell, 35, of Fieldale has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • second degree murder

  • aggravated malicious wounding

  • use of a firearm during the commission of a felony

  • possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

  • use of a firearm during the commission of murder


McDowell is being held in the Henry County Jail without bond.


This incident remains under investigation and additional charges are pending.


Anyone having information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or the Crimestoppers Program at 276-632-7463. The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $2,500 for information related to crime. The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.

FIELDALE, VA – A 34-year-old woman was hospitalized following being shot in Fieldale on Tuesday night.


Deputies rushed to 60 Fourth Street at approximately 9:45 p.m. and did not find the suspect on scene.


The victim was transported by the Henry County Department of Public Safety to SOVAH in Martinsville while being escorted by the Martinsville Police Department.


The woman, who is 4 months pregnant, was shot into the face, according to the Martinsville-Henry County 9-1-1 Center.


Aircare was requested by rescue workers, but was declined due to weather during that time.


The sheriff’s office has identified a suspect in the case, but is actively pursuing leads on his whereabouts.


They did not provide a description of the suspect.


According to the sheriff’s office, this is an isolated incident between two people and there is no danger to the public.
