73-Year-Old Man Dies in Drowning Accident at Smith Mountain Lake


UNION HALL, VA

 

On June 1st, 2024, at approximately 7:40 pm, the Franklin County Communications Center received a distressing 911 call regarding an individual who had fallen into the waters of Magnum Point Marina at Smith Mountain Lake.


Tragically, the individual had not resurfaced by the time of the call. Promptly, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search operation in the vicinity, leading to the discovery of a body in the water.


Regrettably, the victim, identified as 73-year-old Stephen Sykes of Littleton, North Carolina, was pronounced deceased at the scene.


While initial indications suggest this drowning resulted from an accidental fall, the investigation remains active, seeking to uncover further details surrounding the incident.


In this time of profound sorrow, the Office of the Sheriff extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim, offering support during this deeply distressing period.
