A man crashed into a police vehicle, left the scene and was charged with DUI

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A driver was charged and arrested after he crashed into a Martinsville Police vehicle and left the scene Sunday night.

The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Fayette Street near the entrance to Maplewood Apartments, where the Martinsville Police Department had officers investigating Sunday night's homicide.

A marked police vehicle was parked in the roadway with emergency lights on when it was struck by a 2003 Ford Taurus as it passed by.

The driver of the Ford, 54-year-old Wendell Maurice Matthews of Martinsville, continued going until police caught up to him at the Pony Place intersection.

Matthews was charged with driving under the influence, hit and run and reckless driving.

Speed was not a factor in the crash.

No one was hurt during the incident.
