AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - An active bomb was discovered in a home in Amherst County on Monday evening, prompting a heavy police presence and evacuation of the area.

According to Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers, deputies were executing a search warrant at a residence in the 700 block of Gidsville Road in relation to stolen items.

However, upon entering the home, they found what appeared to be explosive devices.

Once the devices were detected, officers immediately evacuated the residence and called for backup support.

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) took swift action to ensure public safety.

"We immediately evacuated and called in support," Sheriff Ayers explained. "Once they got into the residence, they saw what appeared to be explosive devices.

Once that was detected, they immediately evacuated the residence."

Fortunately, officials were able to detonate the bomb safely, preventing any potential harm to people in the surrounding area.

The ACSO is investigating the incident and working to determine the origin of the explosive device.
