The Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (BSD) is mourning the loss of one of its own after 70-year-old firefighter Steve A. Weikle
passed away in the line of duty on February 13, 2025. Weikle, a dedicated member of the fire department for 49 years, tragically died after responding to a structure collapse.
Weikle was part of a crew that responded to a call involving a collapsed building, which trapped farm animals inside.
The rescue operation was successful, and no firefighters were injured while removing the animals. However, after the mission, Weikle was found in cardiac arrest outside of his home shortly after returning from the scene.
Though the cause of his cardiac arrest remains under investigation, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation recognizes the incident as a line of duty death due to the medical emergency occurring within 24 hours of working the fire.
The funeral service for Steve A. Weikle will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church, located at 231 East Fudge Street in Covington.
Weikle will be laid to rest with full fire department honors in recognition of his extraordinary service and sacrifice.
The loss of Steve A. Weikle has left a void in the Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, but his legacy of bravery and commitment to his community will continue to inspire those who knew him.
The Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has been serving the Alleghany County area for decades, responding to emergencies, fires, and rescues.
