PATRICK COUNTY, VA –The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office says they have received several complaints of a new scam targeting our area.
The scam involves individuals reaching out to residents through Facebook messenger, telling them that they have won money for Christmas, according to the sheriff’s office.
They are being told that they must have or should download “Cash app” and then they will receive their money.
Authorities said they even go as far as sending a picture of their driver’s license or identification card to “prove” that they are not scammers.
The suspect IDs that have been sent are local people from Patrick County, Henry County, and Martinsville.
"Always remember this rule of thumb: Nothing is free and you should never have to pay money to win money on social media," the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
Investigators said they are currently working on these scams and want to let the public know about them in hopes that there will be no more victims.
"We are also aware that this same tactic has been used to sell puppies and other items in the past," the sheriff’s office added.
