Charity League awards $1k scholarships to 28 area students

MARTINSVILLE, VA – 28 local students were awarded scholarships by the ladies in pink recently.

The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County gave area high school graduates and college students each a $1,000 scholarship during a drive-thru ceremony hosted outside their warehouse.

The League, established in 1931, says it strives to promote growth and development of children throughout Martinsville and Henry County through education and health programs.

The recipients were as follows:

• Melissa Anderson, daughter of Mark Anderson and Lisa Honaker, will attend Virginia Commonwealth University

• Savannah Brown, daughter of Jeffrey and Renee Brown, will attend Roanoke College

• Delaney Burris, daughter of Jamie and Becky Burris, will attend Radford University

• Hailey Chitwood, daughter of John and Kim Chitwood, will attend Ferrum College

• Kennedy Coleman, daughter of William Coleman and Tracie Lawson, will attend George Mason University

• Sydney Compton, daughter of Denise Compton and Chris Compton, will attend the University of Virginia.

• Julianna Cox, daughter of Angela Vessella and Jason Cox, will attend the College of William and Mary

• Gabriel Divers, son of Scott and Lynn Divers, will attend Patrick and Henry Community College

• Madison Ferguson, daughter of Brad and Sue Ella Ferguson, will attend George Mason University

• Ashton Gravely, son of Kenya Gravely, will attend George Mason University

• Brittanie Hairston, daughter of Brian and Tiffanie Hairston, will attend Virginia Tech

• Lara Hall, daughter of Nathan Hall and Tambrey Fedorko, will attend James Madison University

• McKenzie Hauser, daughter of John Hauser and Allison Craig, will attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington

• Lauren Hruza, daughter of Eric Hruza, will attend the University of Virginia

• Elyssa Kancherla, daughter of Rachel Kancherla and Raimondi Cummings, will attend the College of William and Mary

• Hannah Mitchell, daughter of Jay and Delta Mitchell, will attend Emory & Henry College
