On Saturday, December 14th, 2024, the Eden Police Department responded to a welfare check request at 1315 Harris Street in Eden, North Carolina, regarding a 12-year-old juvenile.
Officers arrived at the residence to assess the child’s well-being and spoke with the individuals involved. During the investigation, Rockingham County Child Protective Services (CPS) was notified.
While officers were on scene, a second call was received, reporting a disturbance involving a firearm. Officers quickly responded to the updated call, where they attempted to speak with the juvenile's father, David Jeffrey Hutcherson. However, Hutcherson resisted officers' attempts to communicate, leading to his arrest for resisting, delaying, and obstructing law enforcement.
Further investigation into the situation led to a partnership between the Eden Police Department and North Carolina Child Protective Services.
After consulting with CPS and reviewing the details of the case, Detective Brock Fox of the Eden Police Department, in conjunction with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office, pursued additional charges against Hutcherson.
On Wednesday, December 18th, 2024, David Jeffrey Hutcherson, 60, of Eden, was charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun (misdemeanor) and Child Abuse (misdemeanor).
The charges stemmed from allegations that Hutcherson had pointed a firearm in a threatening manner during the disturbance, with the child being present at the scene.
Hutcherson was arrested and taken to the Rockingham County Magistrate's Office, where he was denied bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on February 13th, 2025, at 9:00 AM.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with further information is encouraged to contact the Eden Police Department.
