August 27, 2024 – As the 15th anniversary of the tragic murders of Heidi Childs and David Metzler approaches, the joint efforts of federal, state, and local agencies remain unwavering in their pursuit of justice.
On August 27, 2009, the bodies of Heidi Childs and David Metzler were discovered at Caldwell Fields, a remote recreational area in the Jefferson National Forest, Montgomery County, Virginia.
Both victims were found to have been shot to death the evening before, August 26, 2009.
The investigative team, comprising various agencies, continues to work diligently, pursuing new leads and leveraging the latest advancements in technology and forensic science.
The team is committed to resolving this case, emphasizing their determination to identify and prosecute the individual(s) responsible for these heinous crimes.
Special Agent Scott Mitchell of the Virginia State Police stated, “We are determined to solve this case and hold the perpetrator accountable. Our team believes that there are individuals with crucial information who have yet to come forward.”
Mitchell further urged, “We understand that there may be relatives or associates of the suspect who possess information about the crime or have kept secrets over the years. We want to ensure that these individuals feel comfortable coming forward with what they know.”
