Fieldale Heritage, Inc. has announced its decision to decline $1.5 million in grant funding for the renovation of the Fieldale Recreation Center.
The Board of Directors voted unanimously on Tuesday to forgo the funding package, which included $1 million from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and $500,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
Board President John Garland, who abstained from the vote along with two recently added board members, explained that the decision was made after carefully evaluating the stipulations attached to the grants.
Despite declining the grant funds, the Board remains committed to the renovation project.
The initiative will now be financed through private funding sources, a move that the Board believes will offer greater flexibility for the facility’s future operations and sustainability.
The first phase of the project, which focuses on restoring the 1950s-era pools and bathhouse, is already underway and set to be completed in time for the 2025 season.
Additional upgrades have been made to the ballfields, and future plans include converting the tennis courts into pickleball and basketball courts to cater to a broader range of recreational activities.
The Fieldale Recreation Center has long been a cornerstone of the community, offering recreational facilities and activities for residents of Fieldale and surrounding areas.
The Board’s decision reflects a focus on ensuring the center’s operations are sustainable while addressing the evolving needs of the community.
