On August 24, 2024, at approximately 7:40 a.m., a Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 silver Volkswagen traveling on A.L. Philpott Highway toward Patrick County.
The driver ignored the deputy’s emergency lights and siren, accelerating to speeds exceeding 100 mph.
The pursuit continued recklessly until the deputy employed the Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T. maneuver) near Gordon Trent Golf Course on A.L. Philpott Highway.
The maneuver successfully caused the vehicle to lose traction and slide into a ditch in the median.
The driver, Gary Lawrence Johnson, 54, of 3824 Big A School Road, Stuart, Virginia, was taken into custody without further incident.
