A high-speed pursuit that began in Henry County and crossed into North Carolina ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday, March 8, when a fleeing suspect’s vehicle overturned following a police intervention.
According to the Henry County Sheriff's Office, deputies attempted to stop a white Chevy Suburban on Axton Rd.
The driver, later identified as 40-year-old Gary Wayne Tilley Jr. of Eden, North Carolina, refused to comply, initiating a pursuit.
Deputies followed Tilley as he sped down Axton Rd. and into Eden, NC, before he continued onto Hwy 14 and then Old Hwy 87.
Recognizing the threat to public safety posed by the suspect's reckless driving, deputies employed a Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T.) maneuver to halt the pursuit.
As Tilley attempted to counteract the maneuver, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn onto its roof.
Emergency medical services responded to the scene, where both Tilley and his female passenger were assessed for injuries.
Authorities confirmed that neither individual suffered any harm.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Tilley had an outstanding warrant in North Carolina for misdemeanor larceny.
He was taken into custody and is facing additional charges, including felony eluding police.
Tilley is currently being held at the Rockingham County Adult Detention Center, awaiting extradition.
