Hunter Bryce Long
At approximately 6:20 p.m. on Dec. 13, the Danville Police Department successfully apprehended 22-year-old Hunter Bryce Long, III, without incident in the 2300 block of West Main Street near Dollar General.
Long had escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute earlier that afternoon.
Authorities report that Long’s capture followed numerous tips from the public, which proved instrumental in locating him.
The department has expressed its gratitude to the community for their assistance.
“This incident remains under investigation,” a spokesperson for the Danville Police Department stated.

Earlier in the day, the Danville Police Department issued an alert seeking the public’s help to locate Long after he escaped from the Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute on Taylor Drive around 3:55 p.m.
Long had been charged with assaulting a Danville Police Department officer on Nov. 6, 2024.
Officials warned that while it was unclear if Long was armed, he was considered dangerous.
He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and royal blue sweatshirt, gray sweatpants with “SVMHI” printed on the side, and black shoes.
The department urged citizens not to approach Long and to call 911 immediately if they spotted him.
