FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reports that an inmate died at the hospital after a medical emergency.
On Thursday, March 7, Dwaine Craig Hinton, 42-years old of Roanoke, was transported from the Franklin County Jail to Franklin Memorial Hospital after experiencing an unknown medical emergency.
Soon after his arrival, Hinton became unresponsive and medical providers had to provide CPR.
After about 45 minutes of unsuccessful life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead.
Hinton had recently been taken into custody at the jail just over an hour prior to his medical emergency, after his bond was revoked in Circuit Court.
The Sheriff’s Office has requested the Virginia State Police to conduct an independent investigation into this incident.
The body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy and to determine cause of death.
“We would like to offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Hinton.” FCSO Public Information Officer Sergeant Megan Huston wrote in the release. “Regardless of the circumstances that led Mr. Hinton into our custody, any loss of life is a tragedy. We ask for patience as this incident is investigated with the commitment to provide full transparency with the findings at the conclusion of the investigation.”
