A woman from Jacksonville, North Carolina, has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Martinsville man last year.

On September 22, 2024, Martinsville Police responded to an apartment in the 1000 block of Mountain Road, where they discovered 69-year-old James Carmichael suffering from a knife wound to the chest.

Despite efforts to revive him, Carmichael lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an extensive investigation, authorities identified Sherri McGregor, 56, as a suspect in the case. McGregor was charged with first-degree murder.

On January 16, McGregor was taken into custody by agents from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, and the Martinsville Police Department.

She was arrested in Jacksonville and is currently being held without bond, pending her extradition to Virginia.

The investigation into Carmichael’s death is ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest or conviction in the case.
