Kathy Lawson Named Vice Mayor in Martinsville's Exciting New Chapter for 2025

Kathy Lawson, Vice Mayor

Kathy Lawson was officially elected as vice mayor during the Martinsville City Council’s organizational meeting on January 2, following the swearing-in of newly elected council members Rayshaun Gravely and Julian Mei, along with re-elected council member Kathy Lawson.

The event marked the beginning of the council's new term as they prepare to tackle the city's most pressing issues in 2025.

The meeting began with a nomination for mayor, with Councilmember Mei suggesting Lawson for the position. However, Lawson declined the nomination, and the council’s discussion shifted to a vote for the next mayor.

Gravely nominated current Mayor Jones, which Lawson seconded, while Aaron Rawls nominated Mei, which Mei seconded himself.

The vote concluded with Jones being re-elected as mayor, garnering the support of himself, Gravely, and Lawson. Mei and Rawls voted in favor of Mei, sealing the outcome.

In his closing remarks as newly re-elected mayor, Jones acknowledged the difficulties that come with serving on the council and encouraged residents to actively engage with the city’s leadership.

"This job on city council is not an easy job," Jones said. "As we move forward in 2025, I ask that for all of us on the council to move in the direction that moves this city forward in a positive manner and when they can’t find that space to be positive, to spread light amongst the city, to seek prayer in their own way."

Following the mayor’s election, the council turned its attention to the vice mayor position.

Rawls nominated Mei for vice mayor, which Mei seconded, while Gravely nominated Lawson, which Lawson seconded.

After a brief discussion, the council voted, resulting in Kathy Lawson being elected as vice mayor, with Jones, Gravely, and Lawson supporting the motion. Mei and Rawls cast their votes in favor of Mei.

In her remarks, Vice Mayor Lawson called for unity and forward momentum in the coming year. Drawing inspiration from a recent sermon, Lawson stressed the importance of staying focused on the city's progress despite any challenges.

“We cannot allow negativity to cloud the good works of our citizens, our businesses, and this council,” Lawson said. “We can and we will bring forth new programs and projects that will move our city forward.”

As 2025 unfolds, many are left wondering: What is in store for the future residents of Martinsville? With a new leadership structure in place, the city’s residents can look forward to a year of positive change, ambitious goals, and a continued commitment to improving their community.

While the path ahead may hold challenges, it is clear that the new council is determined to create a Martinsville that thrives and supports its residents and businesses alike.

The elected officials have promised to focus on growth, infrastructure improvements, and creating opportunities for all who call Martinsville home.

How well these plans will be executed remains to be seen, but with strong leadership and a focus on positivity, the future looks promising for Martinsville.
