MARTINSVILLE, VA – Several local competitive swimmers are using their talents for a life-saving cause.
9-year-old Devyn Scales, a fourth-grader at Rocky Mount Elementary School, and 12-year-old Myssia Hairston-France, a seventh-grader at Martinsville Middle School, participated in the Empowered Swimming Incorporated Swim-a-thon recently.
The swim-a-thon was a worldwide virtual fundraiser in which donations were pledged per lap, raising money for $500 “Learn to Swim” scholarships.
According to Empowered Swimming, African American children are five times more likely to drown than other children.
To change this, the organization says it generates funding to grant scholarship opportunities and hosts programs and events focused on educating minority communities on swimming.
