A Lynchburg man has been sentenced to over 21 years in prison for his role in the 2022 murder of Estevez Cabell at a local Salvation Army.
Malik Ray-Shawn McDaniel pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, and was sentenced by Lynchburg Circuit Court Judge J. Frederick Watson.
The sentence includes 21 years and 11 months to serve, with 21 years and 1 month suspended on the second-degree murder charge.
McDaniel also received a mandatory minimum sentence of 3 years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder.
Upon his release, he will be subject to 24 months of supervised probation and 40 years of good behavior.
The charges stem from the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Estevez Marez Cabell, which occurred on June 28, 2022, at the Salvation Army on Park Avenue in Lynchburg.
Cabell was found with gunshot wounds and later died from his injuries at Lynchburg General Hospital.
McDaniel fled the scene in a vehicle but was quickly identified as the shooter through eyewitness accounts and video surveillance from the Salvation Army.
He was apprehended the following day at a residence on Georgia Avenue, where police seized a 9mm handgun that was later matched to the shell casings recovered from the scene.
McDaniel's guilty plea was entered on September 20, 2023, and his sentencing brings closure to the case.
The community can take comfort in knowing that justice has been served, and the family of Estevez Cabell can begin to heal from their tragic loss.
