MADISON, N.C. A 26-year-old man from Madison, N.C., has been arrested and charged with Intentional Child Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury after an investigation into severe injuries sustained by an infant.
Zachary Shawn Simmons, a resident of 139 Stephanie Lane, was taken into custody on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, following a thorough investigation by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
The charges stem from an incident involving a minor victim, whose injuries were reported to be the result of violent shaking.
The investigation began after hospital staff at Brenner's Children's Hospital raised concerns of potential abuse.
Following up on the report, Rockingham County Sheriff's Detectives determined that the infant's injuries were inflicted through repeated, violent shaking, which caused significant harm to the child.
The arrest and charges against Simmons are the result of a collaborative investigation involving the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Rockingham County Child Protective Services, and consultation with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
Simmons is currently being held in the Rockingham County Detention Facility without bond.
As per standard procedure, the Sheriff's Office has not released any identifying information regarding the minor victim involved.
