CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — A Lynchburg man is in custody following a hit-and-run incident Saturday evening that left a child seriously injured in Campbell County, according to Virginia State Police.

The incident occurred around 7:43 p.m. in the 6000 block of Pleasant Valley Road.

Authorities say the child had been playing in a yard and ran into the road when they were struck by a vehicle that initially failed to stop.

Witnesses told police the driver appeared to turn around and head back toward the scene after being informed of the accident — but then made another U-turn and fled.

Thanks to a witness who provided a license plate number, troopers were able to identify and arrest 59-year-old Ricky J. Davis of Lynchburg later that evening.

Davis now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Hit and run

  • Driving while suspended

  • Inspection violations

He is currently being held at the Lynchburg Jail.

The condition of the injured child has not been released, but officials confirmed the injuries were serious.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
