SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE – At approximately 2:53 PM Sunday deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call on Bay Shore Dr. in the Moneta community of Franklin County. Deputies found 73 year old Andrew Smith, who was being attended to by medical staff. Mr. Smith was later pronounced dead at the scene. Information from witnesses on scene indicates that Mr. Smith may have had a medical issue while in the water. Remains will be sent to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital for examination. Official cause of death will be pending results from the hospital.
