Man drives to rescue squad in Henry County after being shot

Harley Daniel Pendleton

HENRY COUNTY, VA – An argument over a vehicle led to a shooting in Henry County on Friday morning, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the Horsepasture Volunteer Rescue Squad, located at 18287 A L Philpott Highway, around 10:16 a.m. for a man who drove himself there after he had been shot.

9 minutes later, deputies arrived and found Michael Shane McBride, 36, of Martinsville, inside a 2002 Honda Civic with an apparent gunshot to the back.

McBride was airlifted to a Roanoke hospital, where he received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office determined that another male and Harley Daniel Pendleton, 41, of 965 Boxwood Lane in Bassett, got into an argument over a vehicle.

Authorities said the other male tried to take the vehicle from Pendleton’s property, but it had mechanical issues and could only be driven a short distance away.

Pendleton found out that the vehicle had been moved and chased down the other male and McBride, who was driving another vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, Pendleton blocked McBride’s vehicle with his truck and then fired multiple rounds into McBride’s vehicle, hitting him in the back.

Pendleton was taken into custody a short time later and faces the following charges:

  • Malicious wounding

  • Shooting into an occupied vehicle

  • Use of firearm in commission of felony

  • Possession of a firearm by convicted felon

He is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center with no bond.
