Man still wearing handcuffs 2 days after fleeing during traffic stop in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY, VA – A man who fled from police during a traffic stop while in handcuffs was arrested two days later still wearing them.

On Sunday, a Virginia State Police trooper made a traffic stop on Route 58 at Grassy Hill Road.

After questioning the driver, State Police says “information did not line up” and the trooper took the driver into custody.

While the trooper was speaking to a witness, the man fled while in handcuffs and “was lost in the woods.”

After a search of the area, he was not found.

Troopers say they developed leads to determine the identity of the driver and located him Tuesday evening at a mobile home in Henry County.

Troopers obtained a search warrant and conducted a search in the 30 block of Wisteria Lane.

The subject was then taken into custody.

He was still in handcuffs when he was found in the residence.

35-year-old Kevin Michael Dunford, of Oak Level Road in Bassett, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Felony escape

  • Providing false identity to police officer

  • Possession of a controlled substance

  • Driving suspended

Dunford is being held at the Henry County Jail.
