Martinsville man charged with arson in Hickory Street house fire




MARTINSVILLE, VA – A 21-year-old Martinsville man is behind bars after he set a house on fire early Wednesday morning.


Martinsville Fire and EMS was dispatched to the 1200 block of Hickory Street for a structure fire.


Upon arrival, crews found the vacant home fully engulfed in flames.


Martinsville Fire Marshal Andy Powers told BTW21 News that the blaze spread to a second home and damaged its attic and destroyed its electrical system.


The American Red Cross was called to assist the woman and her dog living there since they were displaced.


Fire Marshal Powers and the Martinsville Police Department collected evidence and processed the scene.


As a result of the investigation, Cameron Deandre Johns was charged with arson and held on no bond in the Martinsville City Jail.


The Martinsville Electric Department, Martinsville Public Works, Henry County Sheriff's Office, Henry County Public Safety and the Fieldale Volunteer Fire Company assisted.


The case remains under investigation.
