MARTINSVILLE, VA
(July 17, 2024) - Martinsville Speedway and the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin have announced an exciting addition to the 2024 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season finale.
The Mazda MX-5 Cup will showcase an exhibition race, branded as the ‘Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300’, on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The event will kick off with the Mazda MX-5 Cup drivers navigating 100 thrilling laps, followed immediately by the 200-lap climax of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship.
The Mazda MX-5 Cup race winner will walk away with a $15,000 prize, underscoring the prestige of this special occasion.
While the exhibition race will not impact the 2024 Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship standings, it promises plenty of action with two practice sessions, single-car qualifying, and a 100-lap race divided into stages.
Yellow flags will be disregarded in the first 50-lap stage, adding to the intensity of the competition.
“We are thrilled to bring Mazda MX-5 Cup racing to Martinsville Speedway, a venue rich in racing history,” said Jonathan Applegate, Senior Manager of Mazda Motorsports. “This event marks an exciting collaboration between NASCAR and IMSA, highlighting the competitive spirit and skill development opportunities the series offers.”
Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell expressed equal excitement: “Hosting the Mazda MX-5 Cup at Martinsville adds a new chapter to our storied legacy. It’s a nod to our past and a celebration of our future as we unite with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for an unforgettable race weekend.”
The ‘Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300’ represents a historic moment as the first-ever oval race for the MX-5 Cup, expanding upon its established presence at renowned roval tracks like Daytona, Homestead-Miami, and Indianapolis.
Entries are open to all racers, welcoming participants from diverse racing backgrounds.
In addition to Mazda’s $15,000 winner’s purse, Martinsville Speedway will award its iconic grandfather clock to the race victor, complementing a cash prize structure that extends through the top ten finishers.
For racing enthusiasts and participants alike, the ‘Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300’ promises to deliver unmatched excitement and competition at Martinsville Speedway this October.
