Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC) is thrilled to announce the return of women’s basketball for the 2025-2026 season, marking an exciting new chapter for the college’s athletic programs.
Leading the resurgence of this pivotal program is Melvin Patterson, who has been appointed Interim Head Coach. With over a decade of experience coaching high school and club basketball, Patterson brings a wealth of expertise and a strong commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
Patterson’s coaching career has been marked by impressive achievements at every level.
He began his coaching journey at Bassett High School, where he spent three years as the JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant. His next chapter took him to Franklin County High School, where he dedicated six years of service.
There, he served as JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant for three years, before taking over as the Head Girls Basketball Coach for the final four years.
Under Patterson’s leadership, the Franklin County team saw remarkable success, including two regional tournament berths, a team GPA of 3.34, and the graduation of nine seniors, with four going on to play collegiate basketball.
At Carlisle School, Patterson continued his winning ways, guiding the girls’ varsity basketball team to a VISAA Division 3 State Championship in 2024 with a stellar 25-11 record.
His strong leadership also helped the team post a 7-1 record in conference play.
Additionally, Patterson has been involved in coaching on the prestigious Adidas Circuit, working with the 15U and 17U teams of 804 Team Loaded, and serving on the coaching staff for CP3 camps, including the CP3 National Middle School Combine and CP3 Rising Stars National Camp.
P&HCC’s Director of Athletics, Brian Henderson, expressed his confidence in Patterson’s ability to lead the program to new heights. “We’re honored to have Coach Patterson take the reins of our women’s basketball program,” said Henderson. “His impressive coaching background, his success in developing well-rounded student-athletes, and his passion for the game make him the perfect fit for this role.
Coach Patterson’s vision aligns perfectly with our mission to foster a winning culture both on the court and in the classroom.”
Patterson also shared his enthusiasm for the opportunity. “I am deeply humbled and excited to join Patrick & Henry Community College as the Interim Head Coach for women’s basketball,” he said. “This program has tremendous potential, and I’m committed to building a strong foundation that emphasizes growth, teamwork, and academic excellence. I look forward to working with the student-athletes to help them reach their full potential.”
The P&HCC women’s basketball program will officially tip off in the fall of 2025. Recruitment efforts are already underway as the college looks to assemble a competitive roster.
