A search for a missing Reidsville man ended in tragedy on Sunday, January 19, 2025, when authorities located Phillip Daniel Skelley, 34, deceased in an icy pond near his home.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a missing person report at 8054 US 29 Business, Reidsville.
Skelley had reportedly gone missing while searching for his dog in the surrounding area.
Deputies initiated a search that included a K9 track from Skelley’s residence, which led them to a frozen pond off Burton Road. Upon arrival, deputies observed two holes in the ice, one larger and one smaller, near the pond’s center.
Assisting in the search and recovery efforts were Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies and Investigators, the Guilford Association of Scuba Personnel team, Rockingham County EMS, and members of local fire departments and rescue squads, including those from Monroeton, Ruffin, and Wentworth.
Authorities discovered Skelley’s body in the pond. Investigators believe his dog may have ventured onto the ice, causing it to crack.
It is suspected that Skelley attempted to rescue the dog but fell through the ice as well.
At this time, no signs of foul play have been identified, and the incident is being considered a tragic accident.
This incident highlights the dangers of frozen ponds during the winter season, and officials urge residents to exercise caution.
The community mourns the loss of Phillip Daniel Skelley and extends its condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
