The shooting took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. on January 25, 2024, on U.S. Highway 220 near Sardis Church Road in Madison, N.C. Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of a gunshot victim found inside a blue Jeep Wrangler.

After conducting a thorough investigation, authorities determined the incident was the result of a road rage altercation.
The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, in collaboration with the Greensboro Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (A.T.F.), worked tirelessly to uncover details leading to Purgason’s identification as the suspect.
As a result of the investigation, Purgason has been charged with:

Shooting Into an Occupied Vehicle
Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

Purgason, who was already incarcerated for unrelated offenses, was given no bond for these new charges.
