Henry County man shot to death identified, person of interest named

HENRY COUNTY, VA – A man is wanted after another man was shot to death in Henry County on Friday night.


At around 10:40 p.m., the Henry County Sheriff's Office responded to an apartment complex on Grace Drive in Bassett for a call of a shooting.


Upon arrival, deputies say they found 39-year-old Robert Wayne Williams of Bassett just inside the doorway to an apartment with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.


Deputies and the Henry County Department of Public Safety performed life-saving measures, but Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.


The sheriff’s office is trying to locate a person of interest, 25-year-old Douglas Hampton Gillespie of Bassett.

Authorities say all other persons of interest have been located at this time.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 276-632-7463. The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $2,500 for information related to crime. The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.
