FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA – The Sheriff’s department in Franklin County is warning residents of phone scam calls impersonating them.
The Sheriff's department says the scammers tell residents that they missed jury duty and need to pay a fine to avoid arrest.
Sometimes, the impersonators claim the resident's credit card was denied, then direct them to what appears to be a legitimate link to make a payment.
Authorities remind you not to share payment, financial, or personal information over the phone with anyone claiming to be from the Franklin County Sheriff's department.
“As a reminder, we will never ask for money or financial information over the phone. If in doubt, hang up and call our non emergency line back to request to speak to a deputy to verify,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.
That number is 540-483-3000.
