STUART, VA – A Stuart man has been arrested for stabbing his mother to death Wednesday afternoon.
The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office received information about the incident, which occurred in the 300 block of Staples Avenue, around 3 p.m.
Deputies responded and found Susan Ackermann Tabor, 67, dead inside the home, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
The suspect, Andrew Russell Tabor, 41, was taken into custody almost immediately a short distance from the home, Sheriff Smith said.
Smith said Tabor showed up on the property of Stuart Elementary School and school staff immediately notified the school resource officer.
Safety measures were quickly taken by school staff to protect the children, who were still at the school, Sheriff Smith said.
The SRO confronted Tabor outside of the school and determined he was not armed when he came onto school property.
Information obtained by the officer during this encounter is what led other responding deputies to the discovery of Susan's body, according to Smith.
Patents asked why the school was not placed on lockdown and BTW21 News asked the sheriff.
“Tabor was confronted/contained by the SRO almost immediately when he came onto the school property. So, I am not sure how the school would have been put on lockdown that quickly. Tabor was also removed from the scene within minutes. You would probably have to ask SES administration about that,” Smith wrote in an email on Thursday night.
Tabor was charged with first degree murder.
Investigators were assisted by crime scene personnel of the Virginia State Police.
The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Patrick County Lieutenant Steve Austin or Sheriff Smith at 276-694-3161.
