Shooting On Hershberger Road in Roanoke Virginia

The Roanoke Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting incident on Hershberger Road NW.


Here's what we can disclose at this time:


Around 8:30 a.m., a male drove past the Roanoke Police Department, verbally threatening officers.


Roughly 15 minutes later, he called 911, threatening violence against Roanoke City Police Officers and E-911 Center dispatchers.


Subsequently, officers obtained warrants for Threats Over Public Airways.


At about 11:40 a.m., the same individual damaged a police car from another jurisdiction in Roanoke, leading to a warrant for Property Damage.


Officers continued searching for him.


Around 1:30 p.m., officers found the suspect at a business in the Valley View area.


Upon attempting a traffic stop, the suspect's vehicle was followed onto Hershberger Road NW.


The stop occurred in the 2900 block, where the suspect exited his vehicle wielding an axe/hatchet, damaging a patrol vehicle, and advancing toward an officer.


Two officers discharged their weapons, resulting in the suspect's death.


No officers were harmed. Per policy, the involved officers will be on administrative leave, and the Virginia State Police will investigate further.

The shooter has been identified as Travis Taurean Martin, 41 of Roanoke, Va.
