Roanoke, VA – March 19, 2025 – Two individuals were arrested and charged with felony animal neglect after a disturbing discovery of dead and neglected cats at a non-profit rescue facility in Roanoke.
Authorities also seized 45 more cats from the property following a welfare check on March 13.
The Roanoke Police Department's Animal Warden Unit responded to a tip about poor conditions at ‘Nomadic Paws Kitten Rescue,’ located on the 1400 block of Peters Creek Road NW. Concerned community members reported that the cats were not being properly cared for, prompting the Animal Warden Unit to investigate.
Upon arriving at the facility, officials were initially denied entry by the owners.
In response, the Roanoke Police Department secured a search warrant to proceed with further investigation.
During the search, authorities discovered a troubling scene inside the home, which was operating as the rescue shelter.
A total of 47 cats were found on the premises, including two deceased animals.
Seven of the cats were immediately taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for urgent care due to their poor condition.
The remaining 36 cats were assessed and transported to regional partner shelters for further evaluation and rehabilitation.
The individuals responsible for the facility, Kayla Wills Campbell, age 34, and Ian James Yaeger, age 46, were arrested and each charged with two counts of Felony Animal Neglect.
Authorities cited the two counts based on the two deceased cats, with additional considerations regarding the neglect of the other animals found at the residence.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review the case and ensure the safety and well-being of the remaining cats.
Roanoke Police are urging anyone with information related to the case or any concerns about animal welfare to come forward.
The authorities are committed to holding those responsible for animal neglect accountable and ensuring the proper care of all animals in the region.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of local animal protection agencies to prevent abuse and provide a safe environment for animals in need.
