Two women die, child seriously hurt after Bassett crash




BASSETT, VA – A head-on crash in Bassett killed two women and injured a boy.


The crash happened on Blackberry Road near Foley Drive around 4:45 p.m. Sunday.


A 2012 Nissan Versa was going north on Blackberry Road, when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2007 Ford Focus head-on, according to Virginia State Police.


The driver of the Nissan was 54-year-old Denise Anne Cabrera-Cruz, of Bassett.


State Police said Cruz was not wearing her seatbelt and was transported to Sovah Health hospital, where she later died.


The passenger, an 8-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to VSP Sergeant Dennis McBride.


The driver of the Ford was 22-year-old Kateland Ann McKinney, also of Bassett.


Police said McKinney was not wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene.


A dog involved in the crash was taken by Henry County Animal Control.


The Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Fieldale-Collinsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Ridgeway District Volunteer Rescue Squad, Henry County Department of Public Safety, Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and the Henry County Sheriff's Office responded.


The crash investigation by State Police is ongoing.
