ROCKBRIDGE CO., Va. - A 67-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple counts related to human trafficking, prostitution, and other crimes following a lengthy investigation by the Virginia State Police.
Earl Wayne Smith, of Rockbridge County, was taken into custody on February 10, 2025, and faces charges of Prostitution, Transportation for Prostitution, Keeping or Residing a Bawdy Place, and Human Trafficking.
The arrest came after an extensive operation by the Virginia State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Field Office, which uncovered evidence of a large-scale human trafficking ring in the Roanoke Valley and Rockbridge County communities.
Authorities seized physical evidence of the crimes, as well as narcotics and firearms, from several locations controlled by Smith, including his residence.
The Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the matter and are urging anyone with knowledge of Smith's activities to come forward.

In an effort to combat human trafficking, the Virginia State Police are highlighting a texting tip-line and web form that allows the public to submit anonymous tips.
Witnesses or victims of human trafficking can text "VSP" followed by their tip to 847411 or submit anonymous web tips through a portal on the Virginia State Police website.
