The Virginia State Police has formally charged Lucas Jason Degier, 47, of Wilmington, North Carolina, with Attempted Capital Murder following the shooting of Danville Police Department Officer Kayla Robinson on February 17, 2025.

The incident occurred during an interview with Degier, who was a suspect in a hit-and-run crash.

As the interview unfolded, Degier shot Officer Robinson before fleeing the scene. The officer was rushed to the hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment for her injuries.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Degier was transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, to receive care for injuries sustained in the exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Degier is currently in custody in North Carolina, where he is being held pending extradition to Virginia.

Once he arrives, he will stand trial for the shooting of Officer Robinson.

The Virginia State Police has confirmed that no further comments will be made at this time regarding the details of the ongoing investigation.

Upon its conclusion, all findings will be submitted to the Danville Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for adjudication.

The Virginia State Police continues to assist local authorities as the case progresses, and updates will be provided when available.
