Virginia State Police Expand Pathway to Trooper Program, Offering New Career Opportunities

The Virginia State Police are expanding their Pathway to Trooper Program, providing an exciting opportunity for young people looking to launch a career in law enforcement.

The program is designed to help individuals between the ages of 18 and 20 gain valuable work experience while preparing them for the demanding role of a state trooper.

The Pathway to Trooper Program, first introduced to offer young adults a chance to get involved in law enforcement while waiting for academy training, is now offering expanded benefits, including paid work experience, a $5,000 hiring bonus, and an opportunity to earn a college degree.

Major Robert Holland of the Virginia State Police highlighted the program’s potential to attract high-quality applicants.

"At 18, many individuals are starting down a career path, and we were missing out on that target audience," said Holland.

"This program allows us to tap into that pool and prepare them for a future in law enforcement."

Once accepted into the program, participants will have the chance to work in various positions, including Emergency Dispatcher, equipment repair, and assisting in the Virginia Fusion Center, while also shadowing experienced troopers to gain firsthand insight into the role.

The program provides practical experience in public safety and law enforcement, all while earning a paycheck.

The application process is highly competitive, with the Virginia State Police seeking candidates who possess strong communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving capabilities.

According to Major Holland, these characteristics are key in finding the right candidates to serve and protect communities across the Commonwealth.

"Being a trooper is a way to serve and protect our hometowns," said Holland. "We work in our communities, and all of the positions we’ve opened are dedicated to serving and helping the people of Virginia."

For those interested in beginning their law enforcement journey, the expanded Pathway to Trooper Program offers a unique, structured way to gain experience, earn money, and work toward a rewarding career in public service.
