ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va.
A fatal two-vehicle collision on Interstate 64 is under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 26, at approximately 9:26 p.m., just 0.4 miles west of Exit 7 in Alleghany County.
The crash involved a 2003 Dodge Ram and a 2006 Toyota Corolla, both traveling eastbound on the interstate.
The Dodge Ram, driven by 51-year-old Robert R. Holmes of Covington, Va., lost control, veered off the left side of the road, and overturned.
The Toyota Corolla, driven by 25-year-old Jesse J. Derringer of Blue Ridge, Va., also lost control, veered off the road, and struck the overturned Dodge Ram as well as a pedestrian who had stopped to assist.
Emmanuel Dontrell Smothers, a 27-year-old passenger in the Dodge Ram, was wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision.
Robert R. Holmes was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to the hospital with injuries. Jesse J. Derringer, who was also wearing his seatbelt, was uninjured.
The 35-year-old pedestrian sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Both Robert R. Holmes and Jesse J. Derringer have been charged with Reckless Driving. The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
