ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va.
The Virginia State Police are investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision that resulted in two fatalities. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 7, at 2:49 p.m. on Interstate 81, approximately two miles south of North Lee Highway in Rockbridge County.
According to the report, a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica was traveling northbound in the right lane while a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek was traveling northbound in the left lane on Interstate 81. Both vehicles attempted to change lanes simultaneously, leading to a collision.
The passengers in the Chrysler Pacifica, Donna Diane Reinikka, 92, of Coatesville, PA, and Everett Arnold Reinikka, 91, also of Coatesville, were both wearing seatbelts. Donna Diane Reinikka was pronounced dead at the scene, while Everett Arnold Reinikka was transported to Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital, where he later passed away.
The crash is still under investigation. Please note that a previous press release incorrectly identified Franklin County as the location of the incident. This has since been corrected to Rockbridge County.
