Virginia Tech Football Names Philip Montgomery as New Offensive Coordinator


 


The Virginia Tech Football Team has announced the hiring of Philip Montgomery as its new offensive coordinator, marking a significant move for the program as it looks to strengthen its offensive play for the upcoming season.


The announcement was made on Monday, as Montgomery steps into a crucial role for the Hokies.


Montgomery, who brings over 20 years of coaching experience, has built an impressive resume that includes both head coaching and offensive coordinator roles at several prominent football programs.


From 2015 to 2022, Montgomery served as the head coach of the University of Tulsa, where he significantly improved the team’s performance and built a reputation for developing potent offenses.


Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator at Auburn, Baylor, and Houston, where he played a key role in shaping some of the nation’s most dynamic offenses.


Most recently, Montgomery’s talents were on display as the co-offensive coordinator for the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League (UFL), where he helped lead the team to a UFL Championship in 2024.


His success in the league further solidified his reputation as an innovative and effective offensive mind.


Virginia Tech is excited to welcome Montgomery to the Hokies' coaching staff, with high hopes for his ability to elevate the team's offensive game.


According to the university, Montgomery has an impressive track record of mentoring some of college football's top quarterbacks, including three Heisman Trophy winners: Robert Griffin III (Baylor), Bryce Petty (Baylor), and Case Keenum (Houston).


Montgomery’s arrival comes at a crucial time for the Hokies, as the team looks to build a more potent offensive system and enhance its competitiveness in the ACC.
